Should Nigeria adopt a single six-year term for the president and governors?

Punch reported a landmark bill proposing a constitutional amendment to institute a single six-year term for Nigeria’s President, Governors, and Local Government Chairmen.

This initiative aims to curb election-related costs and administrative disruptions.

Sponsored by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and 50 lawmakers, the bill seeks amendments to Sections 7, 135, 137, 180, and 182 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.

How the Oratory Olympics Online Competition Works

1. Registration of Interest (Registration is FREE)

• Firstly, anyone living in Nigeria of ages 18 to 35 can enter the Oratory Olympics online competition
• Visit our online competition landing page and submit your name, email, phone number, and location to register your interest in participating.

2. Submission Phase

• Upon registration, you will then proceed to the next steps below.
• Record a compelling 3-minute video (video MUST not be more than 3 minutes) addressing the topic:

• Upload your video on your social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X (previously, Twitter), and TikTok) and tag @OratoryOlympics. The more social media you use, the better.
• Make sure to use the hashtag #OratoryOlympics and ensure your profile is public for us to record your entry.
• Participants must be following us on social media

3. Engagement Criteria

• Videos will be evaluated based on the total engagement they receive (likes, shares, comments).
• We will calculate the total engagement score (likes + shares + comments) and normalise it for fairness.

4. Top 100 Selection

• The top 100 participants with the highest engagement scores will be shortlisted for further evaluation.
• The videos of the 100 participants would be posted on our social media pages for them to gain engagement similar to 3 above.

5. Final Debate Round

• The top 10 participants will be invited to participate in a live debate via Zoom, streamed to our YouTube channel.
• This will give you the opportunity to showcase your debating skills and articulate your ideas effectively to impress our judging panel.

Prizes

• 1st Place: ₦100,000
• 2nd Place: ₦50,000
• 3rd Place: ₦30,000
